a bag hangs from its handle
he carries it everywhere he goes
the shovel has become an extension
of his body or maybe a weapon
against solitude and acceptance
it is unclear whether he desires
to plant or be planted it seems
he does not need to know that
he digs as a means of survival
unlike stealing oxygen
under his breath he repeats
a mantra that explains his
need to find the root
of the matter and once he was told
by a salesman that if he dug a hole
deep enough he would reach
the other side of the world
